When we think we must find or craft the answer all on our own, its like telling the Universe that we don’t want help.
When it comes to achieving true freedom, there is one particular area each of us must examine – our relationship to the present moment. As explained by Eckhart Tolle, the problem is the ego. Tolle refers to ego as a state of complete identification with the voice in the head. He further points out that the problem with this, is that the ego is always dissatisfied with the present moment; seeing it as either an obstacle, an enemy, or a means to an end.
According to Eckhart Tolle – ego and Awareness cannot coexist. Ego can be defined as a state of complete identification with the voice in the head OR with a particular emotional impulse. Awareness then, can be understood as the instance of being able to recognize we have a choice.
The disowned parts of ourselves are the reason for our suffering. There is a line from A Course in Miracles that says all forms of suffering are the result of spiritual disconnection. In many of the great spiritual traditions there is this idea that each and every one of us is coded for greatness in our own unique way. In the same way the seed of a mighty oak tree contains all the information needed for its perfect growth and maturation, so too does the seed of consciousness within each human being.
